The Mysterious Keraton Yogyakarta

Indonesia has diverse cultures; one of them is Yogyakarta culture. Keraton Yogyakarta was established by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I in 1756; yet it is now being led by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X, whose name is Bendara Raden Mas Herjuno Darpito. Keraton Yogyakarta is not just as the residence of Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono and his relatives solely, but it is also as a location of the Javanese cultural center. In this place, the tourists can learn and see straightly how Keraton Yogyakarta retains its existence; one of them is the traditional ceremony. There are three varieties of traditional ceremony in Keraton Yogyakarta, which are Sekaten, Garebek, and Siraman Pusaka.

First of all, Keraton Yogyakarta has Sekaten traditional ceremony. Sekaten is derived from “Syahadatain” word or 2 sentences in Syahadat Islam. For those who are determined to convert to Islam, they are required to utter the Syahadat that is the obedient statement to Islam religion. Sekaten is also known as the commemoration of Prophet Muhammad SAW anniversary. Sekaten is conducted for 7 days, which is held on the 5th of each Mulud Month (Rabiul Awal Month in Hijriah). It is held at Keraton Yogyakarta town square and the courtyard of the Agung Mosque. The ceremony begins at night with Abdi Dalem procession (punggawa kraton), someone who devotes himself to maintain Keraton and Keraton family itself, along with two sets of Javanese gamelan, which are Nogowilogo Kyai and Kyai Gunturmadu. Kyai Nogowilogo Gamelan is occupied at the north side of the Agung Mosque while Kyai Gunturmadu Gamelan is occupied at the south side. Both sets of gamelan will be played simultaneously for 7 days. On the 11th of Mulud Month, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X comes to the Agung Mosque to attend the Sekaten ceremony; moreover, Kyai Penghulu, someone who acts as the authority of religion in Keraton Yogyakarta, reads the history of Prophet Muhammad SAW. In this case, Yogyakarta people are commonly believed that by commemorating of Prophet Muhammad SAW anniversary, they will be granted blessing from God and be awarded of youthfulness. Generally, Yogyakarta people chew betel on the 1st day of Sekaten traditional ceremonies; therefore, there are many traders who take the advantages by selling betel.

Second, Keraton Yogyakarta has Garebek traditional ceremony. Garebek is the highlight of sekaten traditional ceremony that is the manifestation of gratitude to God for the prosperity of the empire and citizen of Yogyakarta. Besides Prophet Muhammad SAW anniversary on the 12th of Mulud Month, Garebek is also conducted on the 1st of Syawal Month, and on the 10th of Besar Month in Idul Adha. On the contrary, Garebek is located in Keraton Yogyakarta, Keraton Yogyakarta town square, and in the courtyard of the Agung Mosque. Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X provides the alms in the form of gunungan/pareden, which is a manifestation of the sacred offerings that has been recited with spell. Gunungan/pareden consists of 4 types: Gunungan Kakung, which consists of chickpea and it is combined with the red pepper, eggs, and ducks. This Gunungan Kakung has conical shape and slightly rounded. Gunungan Pawohan, which consists of fresh fruit, is placed in the basket of coconut leaf. Gunungan Estri, which has basket shape, is filled with a string of flowers and snacks made from rice and glutinous rice. Gunungan Kutug/Bromo, which has the incense burner that secretes fumes (Kutug). Gunungan Kutug/Bromo is only provided once in 8 years in Mulud Month. Garebek needs a box to carry Gunungan which is coated with blue fabric. In this rite, Gunungan is grabbed by Yogyakarta people in Agung Mosque courtyard because they are believed that Gunungan contains magical powers which can avoid danger and bring blessing.

The last, Keraton Yogyakarta has Siraman Pusaka traditional ceremony. It is a traditional ceremony that has purpose to purify and to take care of the kingdom heritages by Keraton Yogyakarta’s relatives and the Abdi Dalem, which are by washing and wiping the whole parts of them. For instance: spears, dagger or keris, pennants, gamelan, and carriage. Siraman Pusaka is conducted once in a year, on Kliwon Tuesday or Friday in Suro Month. The location of Siraman Pusaka traditional ceremony is at Kedhaton and Roro Wijayan complexes, Keraton Yogyakarta town square, and Yogyakarta kings’ funeral in Imogiri Hill. In this ceremony, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X and his relatives conduct Siraman Pusaka privately on the 1stday of Suro Month. They purify spears which are the sharp pointed weapons that have long stalk, such as Kanjeng Kyai Ageng Pleret and Kanjeng Kyai Ageng Godowedono; moreover, they also purify daggers or  keris which have the double-edged weapons and sinuous shape, such as Kanjeng Kyai Ageng Purbaniat, and Kanjeng Kyai Ageng Toya Tinabang. On the other hand, the Abdi Dalem conduct Siraman Pusaka publicly on the 2nd day of Suro Month. They purify carriage, the wheeled vehicle drawn by a horse and it is used by Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono I through III, such as Kanjeng Nyai Jimat. In this ceremony, Siraman Pusaka has the equipments that are needed for its traditional ceremony; they are water, lemon slices, and duster for purifying the kingdom heritage. Yogyakarta people are believed that the washing water has an efficacy to cure various diseases; moreover, the water can also be used as a repellent reinforcement.

We can see that Keraton Yogyakarta has varieties of traditional ceremony which are Sekaten that commemorates Prophet Muhammad SAW anniversary, Garebek is one of the manifestation of gratitude to God for prosperity of the empire and citizen of Yogyakarta, and Siraman Pusaka that has purpose to purify and to take care of the kingdom heritage. Those traditional ceremonies are not common, but they have high value and meaning in every ritual procession. Therefore, young generation must preserve the cultural heritage of traditional ceremony of Keraton Yogyakarta by visiting the places and knowing its history; ultimately, Indonesian culture can be maintained the continuity.

Lethal Coal

There are the abundant natural resources in this wealthy world; one of them is the coal. It is a fossil fuel that is formed from the decomposition of organic materials that have been subjected to geologic heat and pressure over millions of years. The coal is considered a nonrenewable resource because it cannot be replenished in a short period. Indonesia has the plentiful potential coal, especially in Kalimantan and Sumatra Provinces, while in other areas the coal can be found even in small amounts, such as in West Java, Central Java, Papua, and Sulawesi Provinces. Thereby, Indonesian people want to utilize this coal resource. And this is the reasons of why many people want to mine the coal; the coal has the enormous benefits and advantages for human life.

People mine the coal since it has enormous benefits for human life. For the illustration, the coal is as the electrical energy for daily activities, such as ironing the clothes, watching TV, and using the computer. The way to produce the electrical energy is the coal is burned and boiled in the water and it will produce the steam which will be distributed to the turbine; windmills that is used to generate electricity. Then, it rotates the generator; the device that converts mechanical to electrical energy, to produce electricity. Moreover, the coal is as fuel in energy industries, such as in term of making the paper, plastic, metal, steel, bricks, cement, and ceramic. Similarly, the energy of coal is as fuel in the household, such as for cooking and home fires.

Beside the benefits, the coal also has the advantages that many people want to mine the coal. The coal is available in abundance throughout the world, such as in Indonesia, Australia, China, America, and India and it can be obtained by many people, so it is easy to be sold and distributed in order to produce electrical or fuel energies. Another advantage is the coal is an inexpensive resource to generate electrical energy than others, such as solar, wind, and nuclear since the coal only requires the affordable cost, transport, and device; by burning and boiling the coal into the water which will generate the steam. Then, it is distributed to the turbine and generator to produce the electrical energy. The last advantage is the employment availability. In the coal mining industry, there is greater employment availability than the others because not only using manpower, but also there are small traders and distributors who sell the coal. Thereby, there are great opportunities for many people.

These are the reason of why many people mine the coal; nevertheless, there are the negative consequences of it, such as air and soil pollutions.

The first negative consequence of coal mining is air pollution. Air pollution caused by the coal combustion process; in addition, this pollution also appears from the mining operations, such as drilling, blasting, hauling, and transporting the coal. Overall, all of these activities are a major source of the air pollution. Furthermore, air pollution consists of the gases or elements, such as sulfur dioxide (SO2), nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (fly ash), and mercury. They are so harmful for the human health and environment that is sulfur dioxide (SO2) can cause acid rain which endangers the crop or forest and acidifies the lake or stream; in addition, nitrogen oxides (NOx), particulate matter (fly ash), and mercury can cause respiratory, brain and heart disease for human being.

The second negative consequence of coal mining is water pollution. Water pollution caused by coal washing which produce the liquid coal waste and it consists of harmful liquid, such as sulfur (s), mercury (Hg), hydrogen cyanide (HCN), and sulfuric acid (H2SO4). Besides an impact on skin diseases for human being, this liquid coal waste is adversely affected to the river environment because it will be contaminated with the toxic waste; furthermore, there are also many fishes that are contaminated with the toxic waste and it will be dangerous for human being as the consumer.

In summary, although there are many reasons for people of the coal mining; the coal can be the electrical and fuel energies, the coal is the inexpensive resource and abundance availability in the whole world, and there are great employment availabilities for people, there are the bad impacts of it, such as air and water pollution which are so dangerous for human life and health. Every activity must generate the effects, similarly with the coal mining. Thus, we as the human being who lives in this wealthy world; especially in Indonesia,  should minimize the negative impacts by using the natural resources wisely; in addition, we do not exploit it on a large scale.

Road to be Brainy

Talking about education, we cannot deny that education is very essential for us because the person who has a highly education is more successful than person who is not since the erudite person has the knowledge that is helpful for his/her future life. Besides, it makes person can develop the better life and elevate the degree of the ignorance. Thereby, there is a regulation on requiring people to study for 12 years continued to attend the lecture for 4 years. As we know, the children’s learning capabilities do not correspond to the type of school. For this result, the parents should be able to determine the appropriate school for their children by distinguishing the educational system; boarding school and public school. There are some aspects to identify the equations and distinctions of education system between boarding school and public school.

                                                       Boarding School
                                                      Public School

Boarding school and public school have several equations. Both boarding school and public school are formal school, which is the hierarchical and structural education that consists of elementary school, junior high school, and senior high school; furthermore, formal school has the activity that is oriented to the learning and teaching process. Besides, boarding school and public school have similar extracurricular; football, basketball, marching band, qosidah, mading, pencak silat and scout.

On the contrary, boarding school and public school also have some distinctions. The first distinction is the curriculum. Boarding school mostly is independent school, it means Kyai or the headmaster of boarding school creates the curriculum for teaching and learning process. Hence, the subjects are Aqidah, Muthala’ah, Shorof, Nahwu, Durusullughoh for Arabic language and Biology, Mathematics, Chemistry, Physical Science, Sociology for Indonesian language. Differ from the boarding school, the curriculum of public school is created from the Ministry of National Education. This curriculum named KTSP, education unit level curriculum, refers to the content standard (SI) and graduate competence standard (SKL); moreover, the curriculum is developed as a guideline for teaching and learning activities to achieve the goals of national education. As the consequence, the subjects are Religious subject, Civic Education, Mathematics, Science and Social Education.

The second distinction is the spirituality. Boarding school has higher religious value than public school, because the students who live in boarding school must begin the activity at 3.30 or 4.00 am, in the morning. They do Tahajud Prayer, recite Al-Quran, and do Shubuh Prayer in congregation at the mosque. In addition, there is the extracurricular lecture that is conducted by ustad or ustadzah twice in a week. He or she has important role in the boarding school, for the illustration he or she becomes the teacher, good model, supervisor or controller for the students. Unlike boarding school, the students who study in public school may do solat, recite Al-Quran in congregation, and hear the extracurricular lecture. Yet, those activities are only conducted by the students who join in Islamic spiritual extracurricular or Rohis.

The third distinction is the method of learning. In boarding school, most of the students learn by memorizing a text of Arabic and English languages. It has some purposes; to support the conversation of two languages and to enrich more vocabularies. Moreover, the other learning method is Bandungan. It is derived from word Ngabandungan, which is meant; notice or scrutinize. In this method, the teacher reads, explains, interprets, and gives the harakat of bald sentences in Arabic book to the students; then, the students listen to the teachers’ explanation and give the harakat and meaning of bald sentences in Arabic book. On the other hand, the learning method that is commonly used in public school is lecture method; the students keep their attention to the teacher’s explanation and do the assignment in the class; besides, there is practical work for testing the experiment in laboratory and discussion or debriefing session by forming the study groups. Moreover, there is study tour method, which is the learning method by asking the students to visit some places for expanding the knowledge that is related to the subject in the class. The places are museum, and other historical places. After that, the students are asked to make the report under the teacher’s supervision.

From the previous explanation, we can consider the proper school for our children by identifying the education system between boarding school and public school which are the curriculum, spirituality, and method of learning. Even though both of them have different system of education, they have similar goal; educating the students. Therefore, the decision is in the parent; whether to select the boarding school or public school by considering the children’s learning ability. In my premise, if the parents want the morals’ children to be built, they have to select the boarding school, since the students are taught frequently the religious science under ustad or ustadzah’s teaching. As the result, they have good behavior and moral.
